TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My teaching philosophy is to promote design excellence. I am a firm believer of understanding history, paying attention to detail, and design strategy. This is
accomplished by incorporating fundamentals of typography, important milestones in design and technology and real-world success into the coursework. My goal is to communicate, develop and inspire. Students should be good listeners, proactive
and studious. My objective is to help students build a solid foundation, leading to
a long and successful career in design.
Typography:
By promoting typography fundamentals and attributes, students will learn which typefaces may be appropriate to use based on their characteristics and historical background.
They will learn strategies to determine appropriate headline and body typefaces, different classifications of type, typographic grammar, hierarchy, creative type, type as image,
and layout and grid systems. Typography is essential to the development of designers
and should be learned early on, to enhance creative solutions and promote professional design practice.
Design History:
Design history will help students develop quicker by beginning where their predecessors left off. A core understanding of what was developed and why will help inspire and empower students to develop solutions in today and tomorrows’ design environments. Design has adapted to changes in technology and anthropology and will continue to do
so in years to come. By truly understanding and discussing why past designers implemented and developed past strategies, it helps students in their quest to be the problem solvers of the future.
Real World Success:
By integrating real world success and the world’s latest design solutions, students will be able to stay on top of trends and learn to be proactive and engaged to help define the future of design. They will also be able to participate and shape the trends of tomorrow.
I may also share personal projects and other meaningful advertising or design campaigns.
How I Communicate:
I will communicate to students by listening and responding to questions, engaging in course discussions, promoting critique and positive interactions. I will be available for private critique or help. I send out mass communications to classes to let them know
what expectations are and when projects are due. I will respond to communications in
a structured timely manner.
How I Inspire:
I will develop students by promoting proactive behavior, participation and contribution. I will encourage students to critique in an articulate and professional manner, which will later allow them to interact and work with associates and clients. I will encourage students to do their own research, provide them with reading lists, introduce them to professional associations and direct them to articles and design dialog. I will teach them to use design strategy to find purposeful solutions and promote attention to detail. I will give them inspiration by guiding them and pushing them to their full potential. It is important for students to be challenged, so they have the ability to grow as individuals. I will introduce them to design icons and current trends in design. By showing them what industry leaders are producing, it gives them something to strive for. By encouraging students to use a design foundation in their own work, they will become empowered to start new trends.
I am available for live chat, phone conferencing, and email. If you find you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Emails will be responded to within 48 hours, at the latest.
